Building Control

What Building Control does, how we work and where to find out about regulations or submit an application.

What Building Control does

Building Control makes sure:

  • all buildings meet building regulations
  • to establish functional standards for building design and construction to improve the health and safety of people in and near buildings

As well as health and safety, building regulations support energy efficiency in buildings and help meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Building Control also oversees other aspects of construction including:

  • controlling demolition
  • licensing temporary and special structures
  • dealing with dangerous structures.

Islington Council Building Control has powers to enforce Building Regulations 2010.

How Building Control works

Building Control works with designers, architects, contractors, fire services and our planning department to help you complete your building project to a high standard.

  • We provide efficient, value for money, statutory building control service for work within Islington
  • As a non-profit, local organisation, we can offer competitive rates and a vast knowledge of local issues.
  • We have a high level of competency supported by ISO 9001 and decades of experience in the sector.
  • Our staff are affiliated to the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and we are represented as a member of the London District Surveyors Association (LDSA). As a member of LABC, we are able to partner with other local councils to offer a nationwide service, registered details approval and warranties to suit a range of situations.
  • Our public status means you can be sure of an accountable and thorough service.
