Parking for disabled people and the Blue Badge scheme

How and where to park as a disabled person in Islington including applying for and renewing a Blue Badge, free resident permits and what to do if your Blue Badge is lost or stolen.

Apply for or renew a Blue Badge

How long does an application take to process?

It can take up to 12 weeks to decide if you are eligible and make an initial decision of eligibility for a Blue Badge application or renewal. Under certain circumstances it may take longer. Therefore, if you need to renew your Blue Badge please leave as much time as possible before it is due to expire. Please note that without a valid Blue Badge displayed, your vehicle will not be provided an exemption to park.

You will need to find an alternative means to park your vehicle legally in the meantime.

How will I know if my application has been accepted?

If you applied online via the Gov.uk site for a Blue Badge, you will receive an email notification to advise you that your application was successful as soon as it has been processed. All successful applicants will receive a letter with the Blue Badge which will be sent in the post as a special delivery item. Usually badges are received within 10 working days of an application being accepted.

What if my application is rejected?

Blue Badge applications are processed in line with the Department for Transport guidelines. While there is no formal right to appeal, we do have a process in place to reconsider applications for cases that have been rejected.

If your application is rejected, you will be advised in writing giving you a detailed reason why you are not eligible for the scheme, as well as what you should do if you believe your application should be reconsidered.

If after receiving a letter of rejection, you believe your application should be reconsidered, you will need to provide further evidence to prove your eligibility.

On receiving your evidence, a review will be carried out of your application and a decision sent to you in writing to advise you of the outcome. The time it will take to review an application will be dependent on various factors such as the need to verify supporting information or the need to complete a mobility assessment. Whilst we will aim to complete a review of a Blue Badge application within 12 weeks from the date we receive a request for a review, at times this may take longer.
