Council Tax guide

Find out how to register and pay for Council Tax, see your bill, get money off and how much you will pay.

Register for Council Tax

Tell us you're moving into Islington or changing address. We will set up your new Council Tax account and send you a bill in the post to your new address.

About your bill

We send you a bill every year. The bill is for 1 April to 31 March (the 'financial year').

Find out how much your bill and estimated monthly payments will be. This includes how much goes to the Greater London Authority and adult social care precept.

Payments and due date

You pay your bill in 10 monthly payments and must pay on or before the due date on your bill each month.

If you set up a direct debit online, you can pay your total over 12 monthly payments that come out of your account automatically on the date you choose.

Make sure you have money in your account on the due date or direct debit date.

If you pay any time after the due date, it is overdue. We will send you a reminder in the post. If you do not pay after that, you could get a court summons.

See your bill online

  1. Sign up for My Islington and log in after you have got your first bill in the post.
  2. If you already have an account and have changed address, you need to add your new account and Council Tax number that is linked to your new address.
  3. Choose 'manage your account' under 'My Council Tax'.
  4. Click 'add your account' then 'next' and fill in the form.

Get help with your Council Tax bill

If you need help paying, you may be able to get money off or more support with your bill, such as:

  • single person discount
  • Council Tax Support
  • resident support scheme

Your standard annual bill for 1 April to 31 March will not show your discounts even if we have confirmed it with you.

We always send you a second bill later that shows your discount and the new amount that you will pay.

Tell us about a change in your situation

Tell us about any changes to your situation that might affect your council tax bill straight away. For example, if you are now living on your own and need a single persons discount, tell us now.

You should also tell us if you:

Worried about paying on time

If you are worried about being able to pay on time, tell us now so we can help you manage your payments or work out what discounts you can apply for.

Do not ignore your bills. If you do, you may have to pay more if we take legal action.
