Christmas opening hours

There will be changes to some services because of the Christmas bank holiday on Thursday 25 December, and New Year's Day bank holiday on Thursday 1 January. This includes what day we will collect your rubbish and recycling, library opening times, parking enforcement and more. Check for changes to services.

Customer Services

Access Islington Hub

All Access Islington Hubs will be closed on: 

  • Thursday 25 December (Christmas Day) 
  • Friday 26 December (Boxing Day) 
  • Thursday 1 January (New Years Day) 

Central Hub and South Hub will re-open as normal on 2 January.  

North Hub is closed from Wednesday 24 December and will re-open on Monday 5 January. 

Central Hub will close earlier than normal at 4pm on:

  • Wednesday 24 December
  • Monday 29 December
  • Tuesday 30 December
  • Wednesday 31 December

The customer service phone number (020 7527 2000) is closed on:

Repairs

Rubbish and recycling

Collections

There will be no collections on Thursday 25, Friday 26 December, and Thursday 1 January. So, collections will take place one day later than normal. This includes collections for mixed recycling, food waste, garden waste, and rubbish.

Christmas tree collections 

After Christmas, we will collect your tree from outside your home on your usual collection day between Monday 5 January and Friday 16 January.

Please also remember to do your bit for the environment by recycling your food waste when you’re making Christmas dinner!

Parking

Check the parking rules for Controlled Parking Zones on bank holidays

Thursday 25 December (Christmas day) and Friday 26 December (Boxing day)

Normal enforcement with 24-hour offences (for example, double yellow lines, footway, double parking, zig zags, disabled and doctor bays) will be enforced. Moving traffic, bus lanes, and estate parking will also be enforced.  

Saturday 27 December 

Normal enforcement with additional match day controls. Check Emirates Stadium restrictions.

Free vouchers for residents for parking in permit or shared use permit bays on street only. Free vouchers are not valid for use in the estates. These vouchers are also not valid in zones which have additional match day restrictions between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Moving traffic violations, bus lanes and estate parking will be enforced as normal.

Sunday 28 December

Normal Sunday enforcement with 24-hour offences (for example, double yellow lines, footway, double parking, zig zags, disabled and doctor bays) will be enforced. Moving traffic violations, bus Lanes and estate parking will be enforced as normal. 

Monday 29 December

Normal enforcement with free vouchers for residents for parking in permit or shared use permit bays on street only. Free vouchers are not valid for use in estates. Moving traffic violations, bus lanes and estate parking will be enforced as normal. 

Tuesday 30 December

Normal enforcement with additional match day controls. Check Emirates Stadium restrictions.

Free Christmas vouchers are available in the Islington Life magazine which is distributed to residents. They are not valid for use in the estates.

Libraries

All libraries will close at 1pm on Wednesday 24 December.

All libraries will be closed on Thursday 25 December, Friday 26 December, and Thursday 1 January.

All libraries will close at 5pm on Wednesday 31 December.

Our libraries have different opening hours. Check library opening times on other days.

Birth, death, marriage, and citizenship services

  • Wednesday 24 December: open 9am to 12 noon, and 1pm to 3pm (registrations by appointment only) 
  • Thursday 25 December (Christmas Day): closed
  • Friday 26 December (Boxing Day) to Sunday 28 December: closed
  • Monday 29 December to Wednesday 31 December: open 9am to 12pm, and 1pm to 3pm (registrations by appointment only)
  • Thursday 1 January (New Year’s Day): closed
  • Friday 2 January: normal opening hours.
  • Saturday 3 January and Sunday 4 January: closed
  • Monday 5 January: closed 

On the days we are closed except 25 December (Christmas Day), an on-call registrar will be available for the registration of death and issue of a burial certificate for a funeral that is to take place within 24 hours. Call 020 7527 2000 between 9.30am and 12.30pm and we will connect you to a registrar.  

Reporting anti social behaviour (ASB)

You can continue to report ASB the same way you always do – report ASB. We will not be able to respond for ASB from:

  • 10pm Wednesday 24 December to 5pm on Friday 26 December.
  • 5am to 5pm on 1 January.  

Parks

All parks will be open to the public. 

Park toilets will be closed from 3pm on the 24 December until 8am on the 2 January.  

Sports pitches and courts will be open for free play from 3pm on 24 December until 8am on 2 January. There will be no bookings permitted. The flood lights will be turned off so no free play will be possible in the evenings. 

Parks that are normally locked will be left open on the nights of the 24, 25, 26, 31 December and 1 January. Normal locking will resume on 2 January. 

As there will be a reduced grounds maintenance team on duty over this period, please help us keep the parks clean and tidy by taking your litter home with you and recycling it where possible.  

Planning and building control

The planning and building control service will be closed from Thursday 25 December to Friday 2 January 2026. 

Report dangerous structures as normal by calling the out-of-hours line on 0207 527 2000. 

The duty planner appointment service will close on 23 December and re-open on 13 January 2026. 

Archives

The Archives will be closed for stock taking from Wednesday 24 December 2025. We will re-open for appointments on Wednesday 4 February 2026.
