If you are a Blue Badge holder, you can get a free resident parking permit so you don't need to display your Blue Badge in your vehicle while parked near your home. This will help protect your Blue Badge from being stolen.
The free resident parking permit is saved on our system. Parking wardens check for a permit on our system and will know if you can park without your Blue Badge on display.
A free resident permit is for on-street parking only. It doesn't work on estates in Islington.
Who can get a free parking permit
To get a free permit, you must:
- be a Blue Badge holder living in Islington
- have a vehicle that is your main mode of transport
- give proof that the vehicle is registered to your home address
If your Blue Badge was issued outside of Islington, contact the us at blue.badge@islington.gov.uk.
Where you can park with a free permit
A resident parking permit lets you park your registered vehicle:
- in any resident permit holder bay or any resident shared-use bay (for permit holders and paying short-stay visitors)
- in the controlled parking zone (CPZ) where you live
- at any time, including on Emirates Stadium match days
It also lets you park under the Resident Roamer rules:
- in any other resident permit holder or resident shared-use bay in Islington
- between 11am to 3pm, Monday to Saturday only
- except on Emirates Stadium match days when extra controls are on in the CPZ you want to park in
You must display your Blue Badge when you park anywhere else.
How to get, renew or change your free permit
You can only have one parking permit. If you already have one that you've paid for, we will cancel it and refund any remaining time left on it. You can then use your free resident permit.
Apply, renew or change your vehicle
If you already have a free parking permit, it will only expire with your Blue Badge. If your Blue Badge is renewed, your free resident parking permit will also be renewed automatically and we will confirm this with an email.
If you already have a parking account
- Sign in to your parking account
- Click 'view my permits'
- Check that you can see your Blue Badge
- If you can see your Blue Badge, choose 'free resident permit' and follow the steps (if you can't see your Blue Badge, read the next section)
Your permit will show as 'active' under 'view my permits' when you have applied.
If you don't have a parking account or can't see your Blue Badge in your account
- If you don't have an account, register for one by filling in your details and confirming your email address
- Sign in to your account and click 'contact us' on the left-hand side under 'My account'
- choose 'contact Blue Badge Team'
- ask us to add your Blue Badge to your account, including the first six digits of your Blue Badge number
When we have confirmed that we have added your Blue Badge:
- sign in and click 'apply for a permit'
- choose 'free resident permit' and follow the steps
You can change your registered vehicle - including only for a short time, such as when your main vehicle is being repaired - in your parking account.
What you need
You have to give one document for proof that the vehicle is registered at your address such as:
- registration document (V5C)
- insurance schedule
- lease / rental agreement (temporary change of vehicle)
The documents must show the vehicle details, your address and, if needed, the lease/rental period.
If your Blue Badge was issued outside of Islington, contact blue.badge@islington.gov.uk.
Moving or cancelling a permit
If you move in or out of Islington, to a new address in the borough or don't have a car anymore, use your parking account to let us know.
You must follow these steps because changing your address on your parking account yourself won't update your Blue Badge details.
- Sign in to your parking account
- Click 'contact us' on the left-hand side
- Choose 'contact Blue Badge Team'
- Tell us your new address and include photo proof such as a recent bill, council tax invoice or tenancy agreement
If you have moved out of Islington or don't have access to a vehicle anymore, just let us know the same way so we can cancel the permit.
If you are in a new parking zone, you can't park where you live until we have updated your information.
Leaving your Blue Badge in your vehicle
You must not leave the Blue Badge in the vehicle where you use your free resident permit. We may not replace your Blue Badge if you leave it in your vehicle where you live and it gets stolen.
You must still display your Blue Badge in other places outside of Islington.
