Cool spaces

If you are too hot at home, find a free, friendly place to rest, drink water and stay cool.

Find a space to cool down

Hot weather can make you feel unwell, especially if you can’t keep your home cool. Use our cool space map to help you find a space to cool down nearby.

About cool spaces

Cool spaces are public or community-run places where you can take a break from the heat, this includes places like libraries, community centres and faith venues.

Our map shows:

  • indoor cool spaces like libraries, community centres and faith venues
  • outdoor shaded areas and parks
  • things to help you stay cool, like public water fountains.

Each place on the map includes details about the location, opening hours and how accessible it is.

How to find a cool space on the map

  1. Search by postcode or location to find nearby cool spaces.
  2. Filter by type: indoor cool spaces, outdoor cool areas or water fountains.
  3. See whether a space is wheelchair accessible.
  4. Click on a space to see its name, address, opening hours and facilities.

Use our map to find cool spaces, water fountains and cooler areas.

Tell us you want to be a cool space

If you’re a local organisation, community group or faith venue, you can help us by adding your venue as a cool space and keeping your venue details up to date. To do this:

  • review what a cool space should offer:
    • open to everyone during set hours (ideally 10am to 5pm), at least two days a week (ideally five days a week)
    • free to access
    • wheelchair accessible (must say if not)
    • staff are there to help
    • free places to sit and rest
    • free drinking water
    • toilet on site or very close by
  • if your space can offer some or all of this, send us details of your space
  • tell us to update your listing if your details change
  • help fill gaps in our map / list by identifying areas that have fewer cool spaces.

Use our form to let us know you're interested in being a cool space in Islington.

We'll regularly review submissions and contact listed organisations once a year to confirm if they still want to take part.
