School travel plans

How Islington Council supports schools across the borough to increase active travel, reduce car use and tackle pollution on the school run.

We encourage schools across the borough to make a school travel plan using the Transport for London (TfL) Travel for Life accreditation platform.

TfL Travel for Life is designed to inspire and enable young Londoners to travel more sustainably, healthily, and safely. The platform helps schools identify transport issues and put together a travel plan to help solve these. As schools make progress with their travel plan, they can be awarded bronze, silver or gold TfL Travel for Life accreditation.

How a good school travel plan works

A good school travel plan will consider the concerns of pupils, teachers, parents/carers, governors and members of the local community, and will involve all these groups to develop solutions. Schools that take part in TfL Travel for Life and develop a successful travel plan report benefits including:

  • Reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality
  • Improved travel awareness and road user skills
  • A healthier and more active school community
  • A safer environment for walking, wheeling, cycling and riding a scooter
  • An increase in independence and responsibility among students.

If you are a staff member, parent or carer and would like to discuss your school’s travel planning and active travel needs, please email SchoolTravelPlans@islington.gov.uk.

How to create and develop your school travel plan

  1. Register for the TfL Travel for Life website
  2. Set out your school's travel issues and what you will do to address them.
  3. Choose from more than 100 TfL Travel for Life activities that encourage healthier, safer travel.
  4. Complete TfL Travel for Life activities that help your school tackle travel issues.
  5. Apply for bronze, silver or gold accreditation to show your achievements in improving the way people travel to school.
