School travel plans

How Islington Council supports schools across the borough to increase active travel, reduce car use and tackle pollution on the school run.

We encourage schools across the borough to make a school travel plan (STP) using the Transport for London (TfL) Travel for Life accreditation platform.

The Transport for Life programme helps schools identify transport issues and put together a travel plan to help solve these. As schools' achieve improvements in school travel, they can get bronze, silver and gold TfL accreditation.

How a good school travel plan works

A good school travel plan will consider the concerns of pupils, teachers, parents/carers, governors and members of the local community, and will involve all these groups to develop solutions. Schools that take part in TfL Travel for Life and develop a successful travel plan report benefits including:

  • reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality
  • improved travel awareness and road user skills
  • a healthier and more active school community
  • a safer environment for walking, wheeling, cycling and riding a scooter
  • an increase in independence and responsibility among students.

If you are a staff member, parent or carer and would like to discuss your school’s travel planning and active travel needs, please email: SchoolTravelPlans@islington.gov.uk.

How to develop a school travel plan

Schools should register for the TfL Travel for Life website to develop a school travel plan (STP).

  1. Set out your school's travel problems and what you will do to address them.
  2. Choose from over 100 Travel for Life active travel activities that encourage healthier, safer travel.
  3. Complete TfL Travel for Life activities that help your school tackle travel problems.
  4. Apply for bronze, silver or gold accreditation to show your achievements in improving the way people travel to school.

How Islington can help

We offer support, resources and activities to help you build on your active travel ambitions and achieve Travel for Life accreditation.

Islington’s active travel officer gives schools one-to-one support on their active travel journey, including help to develop a travel plan, training to use the online platform, and offers prizes and competitions throughout the year.
